Trail running on the North Downs Way

Date: Sat 31 October 2020
Time: 08:00

Want to swap training on tarmac for some beautiful trails?

I will be organising two options Guildford to Box Hill (14miles, 500m of ascent) and a shorter option from Gomshall to Box Hill (7 miles, 250m of ascent) along a similar route. When signing up please can you indicate preferred distance for planning purposes, it's not a binding commitment!

Plan is to meet at Waterloo station at 8am and take the train together to Guildford (train cost is approx £25), split into groups of 6 or less based on preferred route and pace. Aim is to have groups for all abilities.

GPX file to be supplied for uploading onto a watch/phone, but this is a national trail, so navigation skills should not be required!

There should be the option to finish for a drink/food at the Stepping Stones pub or takeaway option at the National Trust cafe at Box Hill enjoying the views.

Recommended Kit List

Train Tickets: Recommend buying them in advance and storing on your phone. You will need to buy 2 separate singles: Waterloo to Guildford (or Gomshall for short route) and Box Hill to Waterloo. Date Oct 31.

A small trail vest/back pack if you have one or can borrow (around 4-8L)

500ml water

300 calories of snacks/gels of whatever you enjoy!

Waterproof jacket (doubling up as an extra layer for train home)

A dry/extra top layer to change into for journey home

Fully charged phone with my phone number (07970 197145)

£10 cash and a bank card, for any emergency bus/taxi use and for food/drinks at the end

Map: the route loaded via a gpx file onto a mapping app (you can get free trials on apps like OS maps, viewranger, komoot, or download small map areas on Topo GPS for £0.79. Any questions just ask). Google maps will likely suffice, so don't panic, but if everyone in your group takes this approach then you will need to rely on the trail signs. They look like this with an acorn....

Laurie Boult Thanks so much for organising this Mark.  Really looking forward to it.   I'm switching to the shorter 7miles version - good to know a few people are up for this!
