Chaser Challenge: 'Chase-Go!'

Date: Fri 13 November 2020
Time: 00:00

Chase-Go! The lockdown Chaser Challenge you've all been waiting for.

Lockdown has scuppered all group runs, but we can still run in pairs - phew!

Here's a brilliant new Chaser Challenge: 'Chase-Go' - it's Bingo for runners!

It starts on Friday 13 November and ends when lockdown is lifted (likely 2nd Dec)

How does it work?

Your main aim is to run with as many Chasers as you can (one-to-one, obvs) before lockdown is lifted.   You must also aim to tick as many Chaser Challenges from your Chase-Go! card as possible.

Is this a competition?

Yes, of course. The competition will be adjudicated by Laurie Boult and Sarah Funderburk, and categories include:

- First to Full house 🏡

- Most Chaser's bagged 🧡💚

- Most miles covered 🏃🏃🏾🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏿‍♀️

- Anything else that we decide (make up) as we go along 🤔👏🏻👏🏾

How do i take part?

  1. Sign up to indicate that you're up for this and willing to be 'collected' by other Chasers
  2. Use the Calendar to advertise your runs and/or to seek a running partner.  OR, if you're arranging runs directly with a Chaser buddy, we'd still encourage you to use the Calendar as evidence that it's happening!
  3. Collect as many Chasers as you can, and tick off as many 'Chase-Go!' boxes as you can
  4. The challenge wil start on Friday 13th and will end when lockdown is lifted (likely Dec 2nd)

What are the rules?

  1. You must be a member of Mornington Chasers Running Club to participate.  If you are not and you wish to join this challenge, you have the option of sampling our £5 temporary membership
  2. You must be able to provide evidence that your run happened - e.g, strava, photos, witnesses.
  3. Straight runs must be at least 5K. BUT - We will additionally accept the following: track style runs, speed work or hill sessions, and we also include (and actively encourage ) the Chasers' coaches 'workout of the week'.  These sessions do not have to be 5K.
  4. Walking in Chaser pairs is also accepted, but again, your walk must be at least 5K to qualify you must at least include some runs in your challenge

What are you waiting for? Chase me now....!

Any questions - please contact Laurie Boult either by commenting on this post, or by contacting Laurie Runs on Facebook.

Enjoy!

Laurie Boult You can also sign up to the event Stava club here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/Chase-Go

Chingford League race 3 Hog Hill

Date: Sun 6 December 2020
Time: 14:20

30 entries per club (male and female all in together)ENTRY DEADLINE: Midnight Sunday 29th November.

VOLUNTEERS:  Our usual timekeepers are in their 80s and are mostly shielding. The race can only happen if each club provides at least one volunteer. Please let me know if you can help out. You can run the race, but volunteer to assist with an earlier or later race if that helps you persuade them.

FIRST AID: Are you a qualified first aider and are you willing to be added to our list for the day? - even if you are taking part.

This race is being split into 4 large runs so that all members from the same club can run in the same wave, Mornington Chasers will be running at 14.20.

As before, to ensure covid compliance:

  • no on-the-day admin/entries
  • no spectators, no late entries or transfers.
  • no entry to the building (portaloos will be provided).
  • wave start as per the letter written on the number bib.
  • the warm-up, warm down and the actual races will be clockwise (the other direction to usual - marshals will remind runners of this)
  • competitors should arrive in time for their race, but not TOO early. Runners from the previous race need time to vacate the venue first.
  • after a quick warm down, runners should vacate the venue asap, to make space in the car park for those in the next race.
Alon Caspi i will join the event if still open?

North Downs Trail Run (52 min journey) - Escape from the Smoke once lockdown is lifted

Date: Sat 5 December 2020
Time: 08:36

Provisional - subject to new Covid 19 rules (whatever they may be) and cancellation

Here is the plan for an escape from the Big Smoke once lockdown is lifted.

(A low budget follow up to Mark's North Downs Mk I run.)

Get the 08:36 Thameslink train from Kentish Town, change at Blackfriars and arrive at Merstham 52 minutes later.

You are yards from the North Downs Path.  You have a choice, east or west, out and back (recommended as £9.40 Off- Peak return.) or something more complicated.  Run as far as you want, turn round and go back.

If you go west it is about 10 miles to Box Hill, if you wanted you could get the train back from Westhumble,  or 20 miles return.   Going east you go towards Woldingham and Tilsey.

There is a GPX file here:

https://centurionrunning.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/races/gpx/c3fe9681669f03f7cc91fade0ef1a46c.gpx

Assume it will be muddy.

(Groups to be organised nearer the time once rules clearer.)

Andrew Disley  Here are the joining instructions for any late entries: -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Disley <andrew-disley@live.co.uk> Sent: 29 November 2020 16:09 To: Andrew Disley <andrew-disley@live.co.uk> Subject: FW: North Downs Way - Sat 5/12 Afternoon all.  I hope you are well. I'm not aware of any reasons why we shouldn't go ahead with this - so here are your joining instructions. GETTING THERE Run starts at 09:30 from Merstham station.  Options to get there include: Direct Thameslink train to Merstham arriving 09:28  leaving: London St Pancras International 08:45 Farringdon 08:49 Blackfriars 08:53 London Bridge 09:00 Train from Kentish Town 08:36 - change (same platform) at St Pancras International to get on above. KIT I would recommend trail shoes and a waterproof.  Also carry dry clothes to change into at the end in case it is cold and wet and you have to wait for a train. Fluids and snacks too. (There is a petrol station in Merstham and a cafe on Box Hill but not a lot otherwise.) GPX file I'm afraid I can't attach files to this e-mail but you can find a GPX file of the NDW here.  https://www.centurionrunning.com/races/north-downs-way-50-2021 RUNNING GROUPS  I will try and work something out.  Can you let me know:  a) How far you want to run eg 10, 15 or 20 miles? b) Do you want to return from Merstham or Box Hill and West Humble (Merstham to Box Hill and West Humble  is about 10 miles)? c) Can you navigate or do you want to be with somebody who claims they can? E-mail with any questions. Let me know if you are not going to make it.   Any problems on the day my number is 07900 407992. Please socially distance - whatever that means. Best wishes, Andrew

12 Hours of 5ks!

Date: Sat 28 November 2020
Time: 07:00

Hi Chasers! For some reason, last year I signed up for a 12 hour run on January 2nd, 2021 in my hometown of Greenville SC. The entry was only $5, so I thought I could always change my mind. Well, it's almost a year later...and....why not?! So, I need you to help me on a training run. On Saturday, Nov 28th, I will be a running a 5k on the hour, every hour, for 12 hours, from 7am, around Regent's Park. There will be a few different ways you can help. You can sign up to run with me as my +1. You can sign up to keep me company as my +1 during the down time. Or, if enough people are interested, I will put sign ups for pairs to run in the opposite direction. Sign-ups and details to follow soon, but save the date!

Laurie Boult This is totally brilliant!

Laurie Boult Welfare Officer update   Before Lockdown 2.0, people had been asking me about our welfare advice on running safely, particularly in cold and dark weather. You also asked me questions about publicising our runs on the calendar, and the safety or welfare implications of this. Although we're now in lockdown and group runs are suspended, I'm answering your questions:   Running safely Thank you to those of you who have already shared some very helpful podcasts, blogs and specific tips on running safely or defensively. As a club, we're not here to tell our members exactly how to run safely; we're all grown-ups and we each need to make our own choices about what feels safe for us as individuals, whether running in groups or alone. However, the most obvious advice, for running in dark conditions, is to wear high-vis clothing and stay alert to your surroundings. Beyond this we just encourage you to do what's comfortable for you and the people that you run with (and to remember that we are still allowed to run in pairs during lockdown). All Chasers are of course very welcome to share safety tips and resources that you have found useful, but there will not be a club mantra.  Publicising our runs I was asked whether publicising our run locations on a calendar poses any welfare risks. Our running calendar has proved to be a brilliant tool. We've seen a more inclusive range of runs, paces, routes, and distances, with more of you leading runs (thank you). Only members of Mornington Chasers can sign-up to any run on our calendar, so you will only ever be running with people known to the club.  Plus, if you place a run in our calendar, you are under no obligation at all to go ahead with leading that run, and you can cancel it at any time – say for example if you feel more comfortable in running with a group of 6 (when we are allowed) than just one other person.    This tool has been truly brilliant in keeping us going (thanks John), and we look forward to bringing it back after lockdown.   Facebook Our Facebook membership currently extends beyond members to a wider community of interest. We have also made some changes to who comes into our Facebook community going forward. Anyone who asks to join our Facebook group will now be asked to answer a few questions to tell us about their interest in our club. They will also be asked to positively indicate that they share our club values. Anyone who chooses not to answer the questions, or does not share our values, will not be accepted as a new FB member. This is an extra measure to ensure that anyone seeing our runs, or engaging with the Mornington Chasers community, will be doing so with positive reasons.   I hope this is helpful. Any welfare questions can be emailed to me at welfare@chaser.me.uk   Take care, Laurie

John Armstrong Team spaceship has shrunk to 2, so I've asked them to go to the Hampstead Heath Overground entrance at 19:00 where they can either form two teams of 3 with team black heart - or if one more person drops out, two teams of 4 by merging black heart and owl. You can always phone me and Russ if needed.
Lizzy Muggeridge If we’re down to 2 in our team, and the other team at our starting point is down to 3, can we join up and make 5?

Trail running on the North Downs Way

Date: Sat 31 October 2020
Time: 08:00

Want to swap training on tarmac for some beautiful trails?

I will be organising two options Guildford to Box Hill (14miles, 500m of ascent) and a shorter option from Gomshall to Box Hill (7 miles, 250m of ascent) along a similar route. When signing up please can you indicate preferred distance for planning purposes, it's not a binding commitment!

Plan is to meet at Waterloo station at 8am and take the train together to Guildford (train cost is approx £25), split into groups of 6 or less based on preferred route and pace. Aim is to have groups for all abilities.

GPX file to be supplied for uploading onto a watch/phone, but this is a national trail, so navigation skills should not be required!

There should be the option to finish for a drink/food at the Stepping Stones pub or takeaway option at the National Trust cafe at Box Hill enjoying the views.

Recommended Kit List

Train Tickets: Recommend buying them in advance and storing on your phone. You will need to buy 2 separate singles: Waterloo to Guildford (or Gomshall for short route) and Box Hill to Waterloo. Date Oct 31.

A small trail vest/back pack if you have one or can borrow (around 4-8L)

500ml water

300 calories of snacks/gels of whatever you enjoy!

Waterproof jacket (doubling up as an extra layer for train home)

A dry/extra top layer to change into for journey home

Fully charged phone with my phone number (07970 197145)

£10 cash and a bank card, for any emergency bus/taxi use and for food/drinks at the end

Map: the route loaded via a gpx file onto a mapping app (you can get free trials on apps like OS maps, viewranger, komoot, or download small map areas on Topo GPS for £0.79. Any questions just ask). Google maps will likely suffice, so don't panic, but if everyone in your group takes this approach then you will need to rely on the trail signs. They look like this with an acorn....

Carmen Harrington Just  two weeks until the Hellish Hills of Highgate event. 3.5 miles up and down the hills of Highgate- don't be put off taking part if you are worried you're too slow or think you'll have to walk up the hills. It's definitely more about taking part than winning. I had a few pit stops myself when I tested the course. Depending on how many people show up, we'll set off in waves to make sure we aren't taking over the entire footpath etc. We could do with an extra volunteer or two to marshal and do timekeeping. You can sign up to volunteer on the calendar event.
