Club Handicap 2024!

Date: Thu 20 June 2024
Time: 18:45

This is a handicap race with a staggered start, with handicaps chosen so that if everyone came in PB shape on the day everyone would finish simultaneously.

The race is 3.5 miles around Highgate Woods. It's a mostly flat course, but there are a few short dips up and down. The route is light trail but with plenty of tree roots and it can be quite muddy when there's been a lot of rain. Nevertheless, you could get away with practically any shoe except the more delicate super shoes.

Handicapping

To compete in the race you will need a handicap, and to get a handicap you must run at least one race - just a Parkrun will do. If you don't have an official handicap you can still run the route on the day for fun, but will not be eligible for a prize.

You can view your personal handicap at the bottom of your results page. John has written a web page explaining how handicaps are calculated.

Prize

TBD but there will be one!

On the day details

We are meeting at the sports ground in Highgate Wood

Registration opens at 18:45. There will be a race briefing at 19:00. The first runner will set off at approximately 19:05.

Could volunteers please arrive by 18:30.

Time: 19:00

This week's Thursday track session:

Warm-up

30 mins - 200m reps @ 3k pace.

This will be done in groups of 3 and you will be starting at 200m staggered intervals. Runner #1 will run to Runner #2 (#1 will rest where they stop), Runner #2 will run to Runner #3 (#2 will rest where they stop) and Runner #3 will run to #1 and so on.

Cool down

Warm up at 7 pm and we will be aiming to start the session at 7.15 pm. If you cannot make 7 pm, please arrive warmed-up and ready to go at 7.15 pm.

When running at the track, be sure to follow the usual track etiquette. This is:

You should only run around the track anti-clockwise. You should run in lane 1 and overtake on the outside the other runners.

If you are being overtaken stay in lane 1.

if you need to make someone aware of your presence, shout "track"

If you are jogging or walking, do so either in the grass or in lane 8. Do not come to a dead stop on the track: leave the track then stop.

Do not walk across the throwing area.

Do not run two abreast.

Bags can be left at the start line as I'll be with them throughout the session but they will be left at your own risk. The session will be time-based so that everyone leaves together.

SOAR X Mornington Chasers: REDs Panel Talk

Date: Wed 5 June 2024
Time: 18:45

Signs, Dangers and Strategies all Runners Should Know About

REDs is a condition which occurs when there is a long-term mismatch between our energy intake and the energy we expend through exercise and daily life processes. Over time, this can lead to a range of serious long-term effects on health.

While awareness of REDs is increasing, recognition at the recreational level still has a way to go and there are many misconceptions around the condition. Increasing numbers of people, regardless of age, gender and training level, are being affected, many of whom don’t even know it exists.

Join us at SOAR HQ, 107 Clifton St, London EC2A 4LG, from 18:45 on Wednesday 5 June, where we will be talking to Dr Nicky Keay (medical doctor and researcher), Alice Murray-Gourlay (dietician and sports nutritionist) and Jake Smith (professional runner) about REDs and what every amateur runner should know about it.
