Who’s Racing? The Spring race season has officially started! If you are racing over the next couple of months please can you add your name to the attached document so you can get a shout out and good luck messages here Race Report – Jen Hickson It’s 6.15am and a few dozen runners stand pensively in the lobby of the Franklin Av subway station in Brooklyn, delaying as long as possible before venturing out to the security check area.   It’s dark and the temperature is sub-zero.  But the New York Road Runners Club have organised this event well.  Detailed instructions and traffic updates emailed beforehand, once out into the cold, 25 thousand runners are checked in smoothly, foil blankets are distributed liberally (I look like a tin-foil bride) and there are plenty of facilities, water, lots of pacers, volunteers are smiling and encouraging. We start on time, with a run along-side Prospect Park, before doubling back and running on through the park, followed by a long straight stretch towards Manhattan Bridge.  This provides our first iconic view of the world’s second greatest city.  Once across, we turn right and run along the east riverside, which brings us into very welcome sunshine.  Left onto 42nd street and right onto Times Square.  By now there are crowds lining the route, whooping in the way only Americans know how, and assorted musical entertainments.  Ahead, the trees of Central Park are visible between the skyscrapers lining 7th Avenue.   The final mile is run around the Park.  Never was a mountain of foil finisher recovery blankets a more beautiful site, as it was still extremely cold. Big thanks to all at Morningtons, especially Ciara and Liz, who lead fantastic Tuesday night runs and pace the Regents Park 10k, for helping me get a PB of 1:55:43 (age graded 70.4%). On the practical side, we booked a package with Sports Tours International, who were very good.  We did, however, eschew the coach transportation to the start as this would have required us to gather in the hotel lobby at 4am for a 7.50am run-start, and their warnings to us about chancing the subway proved to be unfounded.  The other item to note was that my husband and I both had Garmin watches, which totally lost the plot regarding our GPS locations once we started running between the tall buildings.  Thankfully, the organisers provided wrist bands with split times, so we could track our pace using the mile-markers.   Overall view: Awesome! Fundraising Page – Tony Him I am running the Brighton marathon on 2nd April to raise money for Nerve Tumours UK in memory of my cousin Alex who had this rare condition and passed away in March last year at only 31 years old.  Nerve Tumours UK provides support and information, as well as campaigns and raises awareness on behalf of over 26,500 people in the UK who have Neurofibromatosis (NF1 and NF2) and Schwannomatosis. They improve lives for people with nerve tumours by making sure those affected have access to the help they require.  I'd be really grateful for any donations.  They are a small charity so any donations can make a real difference.  My fundraising page is here Thanks to the Chasers who have already kindly donated :) Fundraising Page – Elizabeth Aryeetey My running journey was inspired by the courage of my mum who lost her battle with motor neurone disease in 2004. She loved rugby 🏉 and was thrilled to hold the Rugby Union World Cup when Martin Johnson and team mates visited Loros Hospice in 2003. Rugby League may not have been her first love but I am sure she would have had immense respect and admiration for Rob Burrow and applauded Kevin Sinfield’s amazing fundraising in support of his friend. My mum was always active, taking great pride in her beautiful garden and enjoying walks in the countryside with her husband, Gerald, and other friends/family. The loss of her physical self was heart breaking but with amazing support and sheet determination mum fought to keep her independence as long as possible. It is that courage that keeps me going on long or difficult runs and will spur me on through winter training and the unknown period between the two marathons. Every day that I run, I reflect on the joy that physical activity brings. Having completed 2 marathons (Edinburgh and London) this year I have decided to push myself in 2023 to do London (23 April) and Leeds (14 May). I am hoping that with the support of friends and family that this crazy 60+ year old can do this. My aim is to raise £2000 towards research and much needed support for those living with MND.
