Race Reports
South London Cross-country Champs at Parliament Hill - 19th November 2022
Venue - Hampstead Heath, a familiar place
Who - Brave Chasers, 11 women and 4 men (*foolish?)
Weather - Sunny but cool
Going - Light levels of sticky mud, good to firm in places
Hilly - Yes, yes and yes!
The Cross-country Champs followed the London Youth Games on Saturday morning,
hundreds of youths really had made a mess of the course and made it even muddier. The
start is a manic sprint uphill, a long steep hill, very busy and lots of jostling for position with
the hundreds of other runners, elbows everywhere, the likes of which haven’t been seen
since the Nationals in February. Gangs of Chasers had turned up to watch the spectacle and
provide vital support to the runners, very appreciated! Oh and it was laps, think you only
have to do the hills once, think again, cross-country is a cruel discipline. Just when you’ve
had enough and want to quit, you get to the top and realise the last 500m is all downhill, and
you can see the finish line and hear the crowds. Smiles all round at the finish, job done! (and
there were homemade baked goods).
Also a massive thanks to Daniel Lewis for taking fantastic photos of the day!

Chingford League XC at Trent Park - 26th November 2022
Another XC season and another visit to Trent Park. Hills, mud, woodland, wind, everything
you need for a proper XC course. Strong turnout from the Chaser women with 7 runners, but
just 2 men, quality over quantity for the men? Maybe.
For Chingford league races the women and men run together, which makes it extra hectic
and more fun, but does mean there are few Chaser fans in support. However with Daniel
Lewis and Jerry Bryan on marshalling duties, and Rob Scott in command of the event it
meant that a friendly face and encouragement was never far away, big shout out to these
guys.
The course itself was really fun; around some fields, dipping down into a long downhill
woodland section and into more fields with a decent amount of mud to keep us XC fans
happy. Strangely it didn’t feel like we had to go back up this long downhill section which is a
first for XC, normally there is 10x more uphill than downhill, at least that’s how it feels.
We had 3 women in the top 10 for our division giving the Chasers 2nd place out of the 6
scoring teams, the men finished 5th out of 11 - which was impressive given our team of 6
was only 2 people. Strong performances all round.
