Well done to Chasers who completed the Abingdon Marathon. Big shout out to John Armstrong who broke the club record for a V50 marathon. Brap brap brap!
Club places for the London Marathon 2023
Next year’s London Marathon is on Sunday 23 April and, all being well, we should have a couple of club places to award to members.
To be eligible for a club place, you must:
be a fully paid-up, first claim member of Mornington Chasers,
have been a member for at least 12 months,
have entered and been rejected in the ballot (proof of this is required),
not have used a club place for the marathon within the last three years.
If you would like to be considered for a club place, please could you email Phil West, the club’s Secretary, on plwest6@hotmail.com by Saturday 5th November at the latest.
Places will be awarded based on past and present contributions to the club, rather than athletic prowess, so please include a statement of your contributions in the email.
Fred Hughes 10
The London Marathon is very good but the really prestigious race of the year is the Fred Hughes 10 which takes place in St Albans on 22nd January (two days before my birthday). It’s a lovely course mostly through the countryside (don’t let that put you off, it doesn’t stink of cow poo). Get involved
New Year’s Day 10k
The Serpentine Running Club is happy to announce that the 31st edition of the New Year's Day 10k will be taking place on 1 January 2023!
The NYD10k is an iconic race in the London calendar that has been taking place since the mid-1980s. The race starts at 11am in Hyde Park and is run on entirely traffic free paths through Hyde Park, with the majority of the event taking place in Kensington Gardens. Runners complete two short laps in Kensington Gardens before returning to Hyde Park, finishing on the north side of the Serpentine by the Boat House. The course takes in many iconic landmarks including Kensington Palace, the Italian Gardens and the Henry Moore statue. The race is held under UKA rules.
This is a great way to celebrate the new year with friends and family, and start working towards your 2023 new year's resolutions!
Entries are now open at Active Training World for the 10k and the 3k Fun Run and are limited to 650 runners - sign up now to secure your place.
If you don't want to run, but want to join in the festivities, why not volunteer? If you would like to help us marshall the course or have any other questions about the race, please do not hesitate get in touch with the organising team at nyd10k@serpentine.org.uk.
Eamon Byrne – 100 Marathons
Good luck to Eamon who is running his 100th marathon in Dublin. What an achievement, well done!
Cross Country Update
The calendar is full of cross country races coming up and it’s great to see so many events return. This weekend there are the North London Cross Country championships at Greenford on Saturday and the second fixture in the Sunday XC League at Trent Park.

Hertfordshire Sunday XC Fixture 1 - Cheshunt Park – Tony Him
The leaves are turning beautiful shades of orange and red and there’s a definite chill in the morning air - which means Cross Country season is upon us. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get across London to join the Talacre of Chasers running at Cabbage Patch, but good fortune came in the form of a post by Rafaele saying that the Chasers had entered a Sunday cross country league and the first race was much closer to home for me, kicking off at the hangover friendly time of 11am in Cheshunt Park.
I’ve not run all that many XC races before but there’s a mystique about them - they are for the purist club runner. No mile markers, no medals, 5 mile courses that could be anywhere between 4 and 6 miles long, and the prospect of encountering an ankle-breaking rabbit hole accompanying every heavy step into the long grass. I bought my first pair of spikes perhaps 3 years ago and have only worn them once - that was at this year’s unbelievably muddy national championships at Parliament Hill - and despite the shoes only just making it through to the other side, I had caught the bug.
Spikes were not required at Cheshunt Park. The dew and the long grass meant that trail shoes were probably the wisest option, but I went for road shoes and they did the job. The field mostly consisted of runners from the many Hertfordshire clubs - the event was very well organised by Broxbourne Runners, with marshalling by Welwyn Garden City Runners - but I also saw a few Serpies in the pack (they get everywhere!). With this event competing with Cabbage Patch I was the only Chaser running, so I couldn’t get a selfie with the Chaser flag - I had to make do with everyone else’s flags in the background instead.
The course was 3 laps, taking in open fields, beautiful woodland and a herd of cows whose effort to come down and cheer on the runners was appreciated. I’d forgotten how quick club runners actually are when they are filtered from the mass of entrants at most events, and so halfway around lap one when I hit the long steady upward slog of the main hill for the first time I realised I’d gone off way too fast and had to settle back in with a slower group or I would have been walking by lap two. At my new pace, with my breathing and heart rate back under control, I was able to fully appreciate the joy of running through the woodland. It’s exhausting but exhilarating trying to run at pace while looking out for tree roots and other obstacles and trying to find gaps to overtake. My lack of hill training this year showed by the third lap, when I had to grind my way up the long climb breathing heavily. Some Kenyan Hills need to be booked in over the next few months. I tried a bit of a spriiiiint finiiiish at the end but didn’t have a whole lot left in the tank and my final position was 113 (I think), which was probably about halfway down the pack.
It was a very enjoyable start to the cross-country season. For those like me who struggle to make the Saturday fixtures, this league is a nice opportunity to get their CX fix. The next fixture is at Trent Park on Sunday 30th October. I suspect it will be too wet for road shoes by then. I’ll be getting the spikes out from under the bed. Which is exciting!
