Marathon tip #5: Fuel your engine
This week's tip is all about nutrition and brought to you by champion snacker, Coach Lauren Longhurst:
Let’s stop thinking about earning treats and start thinking about fuelling your engine.
Nutrition is very important when running a marathon and failing to consider it can lead to things unravelling pretty quickly. Here are some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
Firstly, are you fuelling your runs? Fasted runs are so last season, so make sure you eat something beforehand, especially on longer or harder efforts. Long runs are the best way to practice which gels/ snacks/ drinks/ electrolytes you’ll use during the race. Don’t skimp on when you fuel either. There is no point refilling the tank once it’s empty, get those gels in early and train your stomach to tolerate them.
Secondly, no one is expecting you to follow the diet of an Olympian. However, if you’re not eating more whilst marathon training you’re doing it all wrong. A drawer at work dedicated to snacks comes highly recommended. Try and eat something within 30 mins of your run to top up those energy stores and promote recovery.
And finally, ladies, keep an eye on your menstrual cycle. If you’re not having periods when you should be this could be related to underfuelling and/or overtraining. Don’t ignore it or you could be on a fast track to injury. Look up RED-S and seek medical advice.
Happy snacking!
Race Report – Rosie Young
Stag Mile Race Report in numbers
25 - The number of Chasers who spent their Friday evening’s tearing up Finsbury Park Athletics Track at the annual Golden Stag Mile, matched in numbers by a group of wonderfully supportive Chaser spectators
13 - Philip Barnes’ bib number - Certainly not unlucky for Philip, who put in an exceptional performance to win his race. Chasers were shouting and cheering wildly as he fought off a Heathsider in the last 200 metres to take home the win. Jake Wightman, eat your heart out.
9 - Less than 9 minutes it took for Two Shot Reg to run the mile whilst juggling - Impressive!
5 - The approximate number of nervous wees I had in the build up to the race - why are mile races so terrifying?!
4.47 - Fastest female finisher
4.14 - Fastest male finisher
3 - The number of banned racing shoes we saw on the startline in our race alone (still beat them though)
2 - New club records made - congratulations Kat and Danny!
1 - 1 mile or 1609 meters of near flat out running. Not a race I’m familiar with but one I really enjoyed!
Much like a mile race, this week’s race report is short and sweet, but thank you to the lovely Chasers and honorary Chasers for the support. Having you cheering us down the home straight alongside Eminem blaring out the speakers made us push that bit harder on the sprint finish!
