We have crossed the mark of 100 days until the London Marathon, so for many we are right at the beginning of "fall marathon training season". Over the next 3 months, I will be providing you with some marathon training tips and will hopefully be able to collect some wisdom from our fabulous group of coaches as well. To kick off the season, the first tip is: appreciate and accept where you are right now. Whether you're coming back from injury or illness (like me!) or are in the best shape of your life, you are about to embark on an incredible journey. For those making a comeback, don't compare your fitness to where you were previously. Accept where you are and appreciate each day as a step in the right direction. For those who are in top shape, don't get greedy as this can easily end up in injury and/or illness. Good luck, and please remind me of this tip if you see me pouting about a crap session :) Sri Chimnoy 5k – Gaby Anderson (hot off the press) Normally the pressure on race day subsides when you cross the finish line. Unfortunately for me, I got corralled into writing a race report and after so many excellent accounts, I left Battersea very much still feeling the pressure. Hopefully the flurry of PBs can mostly speak for themselves and luckily I can blame the less than 24 hour turn around. Sri Chimnoy was one of my favourite races last year and it was my first proper 5k race (I’d mentally blocked out the horrors of my first 5k at university). It proved that I could run faster than I thought I could, but last year was not an exemplar of pacing. Fly and die was definitely the theme of that race. This time round, I was trying to ignore the mounting pressure on I’d put on myself. I had a proper target to beat and I’d not got near it at my Hackney 5k attempt the previous month (to be fair to myself though, there was a lot of grass and a lot of sun). The usual race rituals helped settle the nerves, although I didn’t quite partake in as many safety wees as the others. We lined up in our Talacre of Chasers and that gave me the confidence that we were there as a team and ready to smash it! The race itself was a bit grim, but then again isn’t that just a 5k race in general? Going out fast - but not too fast - and trying to “stick with the pace” is never easy. Unlike last time, I mostly managed it (kms 3-4 were always going to be a bit of a struggle) and I finished strong. Big shoutout to Juliette for being my buddy for the first couple of kms before she went and destroyed her PB (40 seconds!! I was suspicious of some sandbagging on the start line I must admit), Cos for pushing me through the last km, and Andy who somehow had enough energy to head back to the finishing straight and cheer us on. All in all I ended up with an 11-second PB and a big smile on my face! Congratulations to everyone who ran - some insane PBs (shoutout to Rosie as well for another 40+ second PB) and I hope our good form continues for Friday’s 5000m!
