Beginners update – Laurie Boult
A reminder that the only way to get a place on any of the Beginners 0k to 5k courses is to register via this waiting list, so that places can be allocated fairly on a first-come first-served basis. You will not be offered a beginners place by virtue of being a member or having a friend who is a member, if you're name's not down, you don't get a place. This is the only way we can allocate places fairly. Please also note that Beginners is not available on a temporary membership and anyone allocated a place will need to pay the full annual membership fee of £30 (or £20 for anyone unsalaried). Anyone new and joining the club purely to access the Beginners course, please do not pay for membership until you have received confirmation from Laurie that you have a place. If you miss out on a place in June, you'll be offered a place in September.
Last call for Athletics
Athletics this Sunday (12th June) is at Parliament Hill. Please sign up by tomorrow the 9th of June.
Summer League
We are all excited for a proper series of Summer League events this year. The first of these will be held at Headstone Manor on Sunday the 19th of June. Please see this link for further details and how the scoring system works. If you have children please bring them along for the mile race where there are many points to be gained. Nick Johnson will be organising a coach so if you are coming it would be great if you could sign up here.
The next fixture after this one is 3rd of July at Perivale. There will also be a coach on that day.
Battersea Park 5k Series
The Sri Chimnoy 5k series at Battersea Park began this week and takes place each Tuesday through June. Well done to Henry and Dan who ran yesterday. A group of us have signed up for the Kangaroo Hop on the 21st of June
Race Report – Nick Johnson
The Hampstead Tri
This year has been a year of firsts for me. In amongst others, there has been my first big race with the Chasers, first XC, first HM, first trip to the Lido, first trip to the ponds and then on Saturday the 28th of May my first run, swim and bun!
The parkrun itself was a moment of running clarity for me. The overall run, swim and bun experience was a reminder of just how grateful I am to have so many great things and great people in my life.
A surprisingly infrequent park runner and moreover, even less of an enthusiast than many would assume this race gave me some real running clarity. Sometimes all you need is a few laps of the Heath with your mates. No more, no less than that. I’d thought about going at it really hard and, even though my body was telling me otherwise, I would have done had it not been for the other Chasers there.
As soon as I saw all the other Chasers my desire to do myself some irreparable damage was replaced with an overwhelming sense that I just wanted to have a nice run round with my pals. That is exactly what I did and that is the entire story of my race – Just a lovely run around with my pals!
The whole run, swim and bun experience meant so much to me because it was just a humbling moment and reminder of how lucky I am to know so many supportive people. All those firsts I allude to before would have never happened without all you guys (the Chasers) making this such a supportive and fun environment.
There is certainly no way I would ever have gone near a pond without you guys! As someone with a genuine fear of the water you really don’t think that is ever going to change. There is a first time for everything though and it usually involves the Chasers. It is always a lot of fun and massively uplifting as well!
Epilogue: I went back the following week, did it again and am now up to 6 Parkruns (only 1 official!)
