You can sign up to volunteer here   Race Report – Wrexham Elite Half Marathon – Lauren Longhurst   I first signed up for this months ago due to FOMO. It sold out last year (and it meant I ended up on the delightful Essex marathon course (if you know, you know)). With an entry standard of sub 3hrs for the marathon I was just scraping in but nothing good comes from staying in the comfort zone. Anyway, a dose of illness, a few niggles and reduced motivation meant I was less keen (ahem more unfit) as the months went on and I dropped down to the half.   The journey to Wrexham was long, and quite frankly I questioned my life choices, especially when I got stuck behind not 1, not 2 but 3 tractors in the last 13 miles. I hoped this wouldn’t be a metaphor for my race performance.   It was lovely to be joined by fellow chasers Janine, Dan and Nicky (we missed you Donal and Myles) and we did a good job of trying not to feel completely intimidated by all the speedsters warming up.   The lapped course took in the magnificent sights of a welsh industrial estate, including the Kelloggs factory, a waste disposal plant and a few houses but was pretty fast and flat. It was windy but I tried not to think about it.   The laps ticked by and I think I spotted chaser legend Paul Simons manning the water station. Unfortunately he was the only one who knew our club as I was referred to as ‘girl in a Notts vest’ over the loudspeaker every time I passed the announcer, despite my increasingly out of breath corrections.   My only aims were to not finish last and not get lapped, both of which I achieved, and I also came away with a bonus 13 second pb. Not quite the impressive Wales ‘all comers’ record that we saw in the mens marathon race but I’ll take it.
