Congratulations to Rebecca Taylor, David Nelson and Lydia Thomson who have been awarded club places in October's London Marathon. Good luck in your training and we all are looking forward to cheering you on in October!
Track Update
Good news, the track refurbishment that was due to take place this October and be complete by the following June has been postponed a year to October 2023. Thank you Sarah for keeping us all updated and attending the track meetings.
Manchester Marathon – Juliette Westbrook
Having participated in a parkrun we later found out was known as ‘stabby park’, been told by our air b n b neighbour that her partner was very ill after the last Manchester marathon (telling us to his dismay) so gave us her number just in case (but not to scare us), and walking over 20,000 steps around Manchester….plagued by the thoughts ‘what are we doing, why did we sign up for this’, we took our selfie of ‘regretting life decisions’ and were ready to go.
The course was as promised, flat (pretty much apart from a few pesky hills in Altringham - nothing on highgate though!) with an amazing atmosphere and PB potential. The course starts by running up into the city where it’s packed with walls of people cheering, which made it hit home that I was actually doing a marathon. No longer was I the supporter which I so often am, it was actually me running.
We looped back around towards the start and past Old Trafford Stadium (which is very impressive in the flesh). As we passed mile 7, I said to myself ‘right we’re almost a quarter of the way there as 7x4 = 24…’. - let’s just say maths whilst running a marathon isn’t my strong point. And don’t get my started around my 8.35/40 times tables…
As we took the ‘long road’ out of town, there was a techno tunnel complete with ravers, ‘street food’ which turned out to be SIS gels, and motivational signs such as ‘smile, you paid to do this’…
The support through Sale and Altringham was super as well. I was thrown the first time someone read my name off my bib and said they were my Romeo, but constant cheering and calls of my name helped get me through (though often left me wondering whether I had failed to acknowledge someone I knew that was cheering me).
A massive shoutout to Ellie and her family who came out to support us! Jumping up and down on walls, running alongside and even taking a selfie with me was incredible. And also to my parents and brother who tram hopped to surprise me in as many different places around the course as possible.
The last 6 miles were hard as promised, but I didn’t hit a wall. I shed a tear at the 40k water station where a lovely marshal gave me water and said my name to encourage me. The final mile was a straight road and a sharp left hand turn, where you run down what seems like a never ending stretch to reach the finish. I took in the atmosphere - again thickly packed walls of supporters, and realised that I was going to complete my first marathon. I found some energy for the last 400m and upped the pace for a sprint finish, and cried when I crossed the line (not sure why! never happened to me before) - and was rewarded with my child size t-shirt (yes XS is a 16Y child size one).
Soar Vest – message from Rebecca Taylor (Kit Secretary)
I’ve had a bit of interest in Soar. Looks like they are running out of our vests. If 15 of you want one we can place another order. They are really lightweight racing vests, no seams or chafe. The quality is excellent and the fabric second to none. They are designed for men but a few women including me have one. I have samples I could bring to Talacre. £60 a vest.
Tea Rota
We are all glad to see the tea and biscuits return on Tuesdays. Thank you for everyone who has volunteered so far. If you would like to help out please use this link
Leading Runs – Laurie Boult
Calling all slower and shorter-distance runners
Not one of the lean, mean types who dash around Highgate at a 7-minute mile pace? Is 4 miles at 12-minute miles, or 3 miles at 13+, more your bag? Great – please read on!
Mornington Chasers is your club as well, and we are keen to make Tuesday evenings at Talacre cater for all who have completed a Beginners course and can run 3 miles. But to do that, we need your help. We need you to come forward to lead a run.
What, ME?? You MUST be joking!
No, we’re not. We are a very democratic club, and anyone who has completed a Beginners Course is encouraged to lead a Tuesday night run for people of about the same speed.
Look at it this way. There are over 300 club members out there, and many are too scared to turn up on Tuesday evening because there will not be a run they can cope with. People just like you, in fact. So, all we need is someone to start things off.
I know – SCARY!!
Our new Improvers leader, Phil, is on a mission to fix this. His goal is to have several runs on Tuesday evenings of 3.0 - 4.5 miles, at 11 to 15 minutes per mile pace, so that there is something for everyone every week.
So, if you have completed a Beginners course or an Improvers course, please get in touch with Phil on plwest6@hotmail.com to arrange a chat. He’ll talk you through what to do, will (metaphorically) hold your hand on the first evening, and will “ride shotgun” at the back while you lead your first run to give you confidence.
Come on – let’s do something new and great at Mornington Chasers, the friendliest running club in London – YOUR club!
