I have friends in high places though which meant free entry, no bag drop and vip loos. I travelled with Sarah Hamilton and between us we managed to get the start wave times completely wrong but we made it.   I planned to just do a steadyish run and see how my legs felt. The beginning of the course was busy and a huge puddle on a corner at mile 3 was nearly the end of me, had it not been for the poor girl whose top I clung to.   As we went on my early discipline evaporated and I turned it into a progression run, passing the poor people that had gone off a little too enthusiastically. Everyone talked of the ‘hill’ at mile 9- I can tell they’ve never travelled to North London as it was a gentle slope at best. A course worthy of a ‘pancake flat’ description (take note Wokingham). Overall a 9/10 for the course and 10/10 for on course support. I think I’ll be back another year and hopefully some other chasers will join me.   I didn’t see Sarah again (largely due to our earlier wave drama) but I am reliably informed that she smashed it as expected.   Parliament Hill Cross Country Nationals – Lydia   “Crossy Nat Champs at PH.”   I think we’re the best at supporting. Cambridge Half Marathon – Lauren

With it being only a week after Wokingham I hadn’t given Cambridge half much thought. I have friends in high places though which meant free entry, no bag drop and vip loos. I travelled with Sarah Hamilton and between us we managed to get the start wave times completely wrong but we made it.

Parliament Hill Cross Country Nationals – Lydia

“Crossy Nat Champs at PH.”

I think we’re the best at supporting.

Not that I’m competitive or anything. ~ Rebecca Taylor.

I think I need a wee

That’s just nerves

DO NOT CROSS THE FIELD!!

[A woman sprints clear across the field]

DO NOT. RUN. ACROSS. THE FIELD!!

[Her ponytail flick-flicking in the wind]

The hill doesn’t look that bad

I CAN’T HEAR WHAT HE’S SAYING.

A siren sounds, lurch -

That’s just the 3 minute warning.

Okay I really need a wee

ATHLETES MOVE FORWARDS TO THE START AND HOLD THE LINE.

The women at the front lean forwards -

An entire field of women lean forwards -

Over a thousand women lean forwards -

Hands gently placed on their watches.

The quiet is overwhelming. The shuffles of giddy feet are electrifying.

Left foot front, right foot front, best foot forward -

Ready to fly.

No second wasted.

I don’t want to get trampled on

At least at first.

Let me just get up this hill

At least

At least

I really think I need a wee -

Gun.

We squeal and we laugh like we’re running to the sea.

Feet slip and gallop, we’ve been unleashed

No grip to see

GO ON CHASERS!

Who you’re passing, or who’s passing you.

Avoid mud,

Find more mud,

Submit

To the mud.

I’ve lost my shoe!

[she thumps into my chest]

I need to get my shoe!

GO ON CHASERS!

Chest tight, throat tight, cold air in my lungs

Foot tight, calf tight, something’s going wrong.

Is it even cold?

Quads burning, arms fizzing

Face hurting, hair whipping

I thought I knew the Heath, but

What is that smell?

I thought I knew the Heath, but

Grass flicking, worms licking

Sun beating, breath heating

And then I relax,

              and then it’s okay.

Breathe.

The bit through the woods

                                                          is amazing.

We all run in single file,

              and no one is overtaking,

and it’s great.

SPRINT FINISH

Goes on for longer

Than you expect.

TAKE HER. TAKE HER. YOU’VE GOT THIS.

But you’ve committed now, my friend.

You find a new gear.

Even after all this

Even after all that

You find a new gear and you

Dig. And you drive it through to the end.

Then peace. Then pounding blood brain breath.

Then peace.

***

I heard someone shout, “F***. F****ing hell”.

Sums it up.

Did you enjoy it? Errrrrrrm

Did you enjoy it? […] You got it done, yeah. Yeah.

Errrrrrmm

I had so much fun!

The people who ran fast had a horrible time,

The people who ran slowly had a brilliant time.

Okay but I ran slowly, and I still had a horrible time.

Haha okay.

Cheese scone?

I know the Heath, but it was completely -

                                                                                      Could have been anywhere.

If anyone finds a pair of glasses…

If anyone finds a shoe…

[A man crosses the finish line with just one shoe]

I thought I knew the Heath but

Could have been anywhere.

I know the Heath

And the Heath knows me

I love the Heath

But it doesn’t love me

It has sapped our souls,

And made us new

It has given us glory

But it owes us back our shoes.
