London Landmarks Half Marathon - Race Review by Alex Renton
The London Landmarks Half Marathon is the largest race in the capital since The Big Half last March. I got the place from work about a month ago and had forgotten about it. Most of my training had been for the Stag Mile and shorter races so I was quite unprepared. In the weeks before the race I had received a flurry of emails about the ‘amazing activations’ on the route on the theme of ‘lockdown life’ which both amused me and depressed me in equal measure. Why anybody would want to recall empty shelves and zoom quizzes was beyond me.
On the day I felt very different. Even the journey to the start line I felt that excitement that only large events can provide as thousands of people were getting together to raise money for great charities, to achieve a time goal or just to get round the course. I guess for us running club folk we mainly focus on what our time will be and whether we will achieve that elusive personal best that we’ve been chasing but it was great to see that there are a million other things that people race for.
The start line was separated into various ‘waves’ with wacky names. I was in ‘Lightning’ but if I had put a slower time I could have been in ‘Mexican’ or ‘Rainbow’. It was fantastic to line up with thousands of people again and the atmosphere took away all my cynicism. The ‘clapping for carers’ bridge and the ‘zoom quiz corners’ weren’t really a thing. I only noticed someone dressed as a loo roll dancing around with an empty trolley in a very awkward British manner. I finished the race feeling full of joy mainly from being around so many inspirational people. London has taken a battering over the last year or so, but I was reminded what a beautiful place it was and how a race can bring people together in a very unique way.
