Race Report- Race to the Stones 100km 15/16th July 2017 On Saturday 15th July, Eamon and I met at 5am at Victoria and boarded the Oxford Tube to get to the start of Race to the Stones, a 100km adventure across the Chilterns and the North Wessex Downs ending at the neolithic stones in Avebury. We heard rumours that Matt Thomas was another Chaser embarking on the challenge, but he was so super speedy we didn’t even spot him! The route is absolutely stunning and along the way we met lots of lovely people who were happy to chat away to us for a little while. So different from a marathon, we stopped at each aid station for between 10 and 20 minutes to have some real food, a chat and, on the second day, have my blisters professionally wrapped by medics who usually work on the air ambulances and major traumas (which it was to me at the time!) We opted for the two day option and so we spent Saturday night in basecamp at the 50km mark where we had a tent ready and waiting for us, access to a hot meal and a super hot shower and even a free massage! We spent the evening sitting in camping chairs drinking mugs of hot tea and talking to new friends we made along the route. At 6am on Sunday we set off to conquer day two, unsure how we would feel having run 50km the day before. I enjoyed day two more than day one, the weather was glorious and it felt like we were on the home stretch, even with 31 miles still to go. I would certainly recommend the event to anyone who is looking to make the leap from marathons to ultras. It isn’t cheap, but what you get for your money is reassurance and lots of home comforts. Dubbed a ‘baby-ultra’ it gives you the opportunity to try something challenging while knowing you have lots of support. And of course a brilliant medal and bragging rights! I’d like to thank Eamon for all his support, for getting me through it and for putting up with me. I moaned a lot. On day one it rained. It wasn’t forecast to rain. This made me mad. On day two I got a blister (have I mentioned that?!) and used all his Compeed plasters. Thank you Eamon, your patience is infinite!- Suzanne Summer Picnic Come along to the Chaser's Summer Picnic on 28th August from 2pm. Cheese and wine will be provided, all you need to bring is yourself and whatever extra food and drink you fancy. The picnic will be held at Hampstead Heath (exact location tbc).
