Four Chasers made their way to St Albans last Saturday for the second Southern Athletics League fixture of the year (a whopping 33% increase on the previous match). Sun followed by lashing rain and hailstones followed by more sun followed by a light rain shower made for a sunburnt and damp team. Nevertheless, we represented the club across various track and field events.
Lauren broke the current club record for 800m and was still fresh enough to take part in the 400m, and win overall in the high jump. Dave Nelson scored pbs in the men’s 800m and 3000m while Stephen flew about in the 400m and 3000m (also a pb) and managed a few graceful landings in the triple jump. I (Carmen) secured a 400m pb thanks to the woman behind me who was threatening to pass me with a sprint finish. I also learned that I won’t be quitting my job to become a professional javelin thrower any time soon.
Our grand plan to enter the entire team into the women's 400m relay didn't come into fruition as none of us thought to bring any wigs for the men but also due to the astounding moral compasses possessed by all team members.
The next fixture will take place at Lee Valley athletics track on the 17th of June. Come along and see if you can beat a club record yourself, or at least try to beat my javelin score (it might be a good idea to practice throwing a javelin prior to entering the event).
A training schedule has been put together to give you some ideas and structure for your runs outside of the Tuesday and Thursday club nights.
The schedule will continue throughout the year and be based around the target races in the calendar, but provides a useful structure for anyone looking to get out there and improve their running in general.
It's fully adjustable, allowing you to choose how many days each week you would like to run and then it bases your runs around your estimated 10k time. Access it here.
Chislehurst half marathon
Apart from having to run an extra half mile the race was a lovely mix of trail and roads, quite hilly and (mostly...) well-organised.- Ian
