The Summer League is a series of four (previously five) Sunday morning 'inter-club race events' run from June to August. Each 'event' includes an adult race of either 5 miles or 10K, a one-mile tenderfoot race for children, a very short parent and toddler race and 400m relays that involve just about everyone. If you have children they are very welcome to participate for the club making these a terrific family outing. The host club lays on a feast, marshals and organises their event. Points are scored with team and individual prizes at the end of each season presented at the start of the next - this year at Headstone Manor, Harrow. Danielle is our Summer Series organiser for 2016.

THURSDAY COACHING We are very happy to welcome Urban Bettag as our regular Thursday coach from 12th May. Urban will lead sessions once a month, and will also provide a session plan for the rest of the year. He is keen to help us to get more club members involved in coaching. If you are interested in getting involved in leading or helping to deliver sessions on Thursdays, please contact Adrian Cathersides. Even if you can only help occasionally, it would be great to have your name on the list of volunteers. You don’t need a qualification to do this, but if you do want to gain a coaching qualification, the club can help (see below).
Many thanks to Andrea and Avril for holding the fort so well on Thursdays since Tom Craggs’s departure. We all appreciate their hard work. Andrea and Avril will continue to deliver coached sessions on Tuesdays.
BEGINNERS PROGRAMME Our beginners programme is designed for those who can’t yet run 5K continuously. The next wave of the beginners programme will start on Tuesday 26th April, so please spread the word! If you are interested in joining the band of club members who help to deliver the beginners programme, please contact John Armstrong. You don’t need a coaching qualification to do this, but if you want to qualify, the club can help (see below).
COACHING QUALIFICATIONS: The club would like to build our capacity in coaching by encouraging members to qualify as Leader in Running Fitness and (for those who already have the LIRF qualification) Coach in Running Fitness. You can check out upcoming courses on the England Athletics website. If you would like the club to consider paying for your qualification, please email Alice Sullivan and Rob Mitchell. For the club to pay, you simply need to outline the ways you will use the qualification for the benefit of the club as a volunteer – e.g. getting involved in Thursday sessions, helping with the beginners, leading runs on Tuesdays.
If you’d like your fundraising to be included in the newsletter, please email the details to newsletter@chaser.me.uk before 15 May. If you do then not only will you be advertising to a whole load of potential sponsors in your fellow clubmates, the club itself may also consider making a donation to your chosen charity.
Ian Girling is running the London Marathon for the Mayhew Animal Home – sponsor him here.
New member Lola is running the London Marathon raising money for MacMillan Cancer Support and still has a long way to go to her target of £2,000. Sponsor her here.
Both the Tuesday and Thursday sessions this week will be led by Andrea. Details will be posted on the Mornington Chasers Facebook page in advance for anyone unable to attend.
If you have something to say about a race you’ve run or can recommend any upcoming races, please email newsletter@chaser.me.uk.
Southern Athletics League, Lea Valley Athletics Track, Saturday 16th April
We had a fun day out at the first fixture of the Southern Athletics League - who would have thought that Chasers would also be able to compete in the long jump, javelin and shot put! There was a bit of nerves in the car on the way there given only one of us had ever done anything like that before but well done to Simon Fitzmaurice, Jeff Bannister, Lucy Fox and Ciara McManus for giving it their all and representing the club. See below for the official results but congratulations to Lucy who placed first in the women's 1500m, Jeff and Simon both put in great efforts in the 800m and 5000m with Simon getting a PB. Thanks go to Daniele Biagi who withstood the wind and chill to help out being a track/field judge as he was recovering from a recent marathon. Would recommend this event for anyone who wants to represent the club in a slightly different way with the added benefit of really being part of a team! There are 4 other fixtures left as part of the series so do let Lauren Longhurst know if you are interested.
Silver medal for Andrea at ETU In Kalkar
Wunderland in Kalkar - an amusement park and hotel complex next to the Rhine - proved to be a more challenging and surreal choice for The European Triathlon Union (ETU) championships at the weekend than it looked on paper. Following a day of sunshine and showers (including hail) the women's sprint set off at 19:15 and a lovely sunset. The run included a section along the ridge of a dyke by the river and along the side of the gaudy coloured theme park. The cycle section was out in the country on long straight, flat roads and immaculate surface. The wind, tight corners and a long cobbled section in and out of transition added to the adventure. I personally had a real battle, as expected after my win in Adelaide and limited run training this year, and picked up silver with just 12 seconds between me and the gold medal. My time was 1:17:26. Now down to work before the ITU Championships in June. Andrea Sanders-Reece
